Why You Feel Lost During Life Transitions (Even When Nothing Is Wrong)
Why do major life changes leave us feeling lost, even when we've chosen them?
People often arrive believing they're struggling with a decision.
Should I leave?
Should I stay?
Should I retire?
Should I end the relationship?
Should I start over?
It seems like the decision is the problem.
Most of the time, it isn't.
The real disruption began much earlier.
Life transitions aren't difficult because our circumstances change. They're difficult because our identity begins changing before we've found language for it. We still know how to answer the question, "What do you do?" We still know where we live, who we're married to, and what our routine looks like. Outwardly, very little has changed.
Inwardly, something has already started to loosen.
The life that carried us this far no longer fits quite the way it used to.
That's a strange place to live.
Nothing is obviously wrong. In fact, from the outside things may look enviable. A good career. A stable relationship. A comfortable life. Yet a quiet feeling keeps returning that says, Something is ending.
Not dramatically.
Just steadily.
Many people mistake this feeling for confusion. They assume they need more information, better advice, or a clearer plan.
Sometimes what they need is to recognize that they are standing between two identities.
The old one no longer feels true.
The new one hasn't arrived.
That space in between is profoundly uncomfortable because we prefer certainty to transition. We want the next chapter before we've finished grieving the last one.
But transitions don't work that way.
They ask something different of us.
Not immediate action.
Attention.
Can you notice what no longer fits before rushing to replace it?
Can you stay with uncertainty long enough for something more honest to emerge?
I've spent more than twenty years working with people navigating life transitions. What I've noticed is that clarity rarely arrives as a sudden revelation. More often, it grows quietly as people begin paying attention to what they can no longer ignore.
The transition doesn't begin the day you make the decision.
It begins the day your life starts asking a different question.
Most people arrive with a problem they can describe. Often, beneath it is a life transition they haven't fully understood yet. If you're navigating a season of change and would value a thoughtful conversation, you can learn more about my coaching or book a complimentary discovery conversation.
